‘Orphan states’ like Texas, unimportant in the presidential race, could decide control of the House

About 30 congressional seats in Texas, California, New York and Illinois are up for grabs, according to Sabato's Crystal Ball, the web site of University of Virginia government professor Larry J. Sabato. These "orphan states" could well hold the balance of power in the House, where Democrats must pick up 25 seats to replace John Boehner as speaker with Nancy Pelosi. The two parties also have targeted 18 other House races in states without a close presidential contest. Democrats are hoping to gain four GOP seats in Minnesota, while Republicans dream of capturing Democratic seats in both Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
